One can easily experience the variety of Maine's maritime heritage in our magnificent maritime museums, which reflect the history of their own locales as well as that of the state as a whole. Located on the grounds of the Percy and Small Shipyard in Bath, the buildings, models, paintings and other holdings of the Maine Maritime Museum tell as complete a story as any about the state's exciting maritime past. Further east, Searsport's Penobscot Marine Museum focuses on the merchant captains of Penobscot Bay who for centuries have been at the center of a world-wide-web of commerce under sail and steam.
The Portland Harbor Museum in South Portland celebrates the enduring vitality of shipping in Maine, and especially the Port of Portland, the busiest in New England. Overseeing this bustling harbor is the Portland Observatory. Built in 1807, it is the only surviving maritime signal tower in the United States. The Maine Historical Society's Center for Maine History is a rich repository of papers and records about the families that built, crewed and managed Maine fleets.
