One can?t go far on the Maritime Maine Heritage Trail without encountering evidence of fishing, long a mainstay of the State?s economy. The Downeast Fisheries Trail, stretching along Maine's "Sunrise Coast", offers a glimpse of the area's still-thriving fishing tradition. The Portland Fish Exchange holds the biggest fish auctions in New England. Hungry travelers will find ample opportunity to savor the bounty of our seas, lakes and rivers at the innumerable restaurants that grace Maine's coves, rivers and bays, often with stunning views of the waters where their meal was caught.
Fishery exhibits can be found at most maritime museums. A fascinating diorama portraying work in a fish cannery is one of several maritime themes presented at the Maine State Museum in Augusta. For a more intimate look at lobstering, boats in communities like Boothbay Harbor, Stonington and Eastport offer tours with hands-on demonstrations of how traps are set and hauled. Lobstermen are particularly proud of their work and their vessels, and lobster boat races are held around the state throughout July and August.
